SCA Background

1. Who is SCA?

SCA is the world’s leading provider of prize coverage for promotions, contests, and games. Our clients include Fortune 500 companies, independent retailers, media, sports teams, Internet companies, as well as advertising and insurance agencies. We assume the risk on promotions, and if there is a winner, we provide our clients with the money to cover their grand prize payouts. Our clients do not have to worry about a promotion being too successful and breaking their budget, as they pay a fixed cost upfront.

2. How do prize coverage programs work?

Clients come to us with a need, an idea, or a fully-fleshed-out campaign. We calculate the odds to develop an expected pay-out, secure coverage, and charge a fixed fee to the client. Fees are typically 3–15% of the actual prize value being offered. The client then runs the promotion, and if there is a winner, we provide them with money to cover their grand prize.

3. How long has SCA Promotions been in business?

SCA was founded in 1986 in Dallas, TX. Since then, we have covered billions of dollars and have paid out over $191 million in cash and prizes.

4. What happens if someone wins the grand prize?

We will review the claim and send payment within one week. In cases where the prize claim is of public record, payment can often be delivered within three business days once the terms in the contract have been verified.

5. Am I purchasing insurance?

No.  We provide prize coverage and secure the agreement with you (the promotion sponsor) on a business contract. SCA retains some risk while the bulk of the overall risk is placed with various insurers, such as North American Specialty Insurance Company, a Swiss Re company.

6. Does SCA offer sweepstakes administration services or just prize coverage?

We provide both. SCA’s staff has an in-depth knowledge of sweepstakes and contest rules and regulations. We can work with you as much or as little as you want on your sweepstakes, providing bonding and registration only, or working with you on every aspect of your promotion from administration and rules to fulfillment. 7.  How do you work with marketing/promotion agencies?

We work with marketing and promotion agencies as much or as little as needed. We can be a silent partner simply providing prize coverage and security or we can provide a wide range of ancillary services to complement your agency’s efforts. 8. Do you pay a commission to insurance brokers?

9. Does SCA Promotions offer prize coverage for promotions outside the United States?

No. We have experience covering prize amounts from $5,000 up to $1 billion.

It depends—we take into consideration the expected payout, the grand prize you are offering, whether or not it is skills-based or mathematical odds, and the number of chances to win. 4. When planning my promotion, when should I call SCA?

If your promotion is straightforward, like a hole-in-one contest or a half-court shot, SCA can provide your coverage with just a day or two of notice. Many promotions take longer to process though, particularly those that require registration and bonding or web development; those can take weeks. We recommend including SCA as early in the planning process as possible for any custom promotions.

Legal and other considerations

1. Are there legal considerations?

Yes.  Promotions are regulated by the states, and each state has different laws. We have an in-depth knowledge of these rules and laws, and will ensure that any promotion you run with us complies with all laws in the state where it is hosted.

2. Do I have to bond and register my promotion?

Four states require bonding and registration: New York, Florida, Rhode Island, and Arizona. We will make sure all bonding and registration is complete before your promotion begins.

1. What should I do if I have a winner?

Call your SCA representative immediately to find out what steps you need to take to get your payment. Your contract will also provide you with important information, such as tax forms for your winner to fill out.  If it is after hours, call 214-507-8749.

Discuss options with your SCA representative as soon as possible.  In many cases, you can purchase additional coverage to keep your promotion going.
