"I didn't believe it," says Stevens, who admits to being more nervous than Brent was after she'd won. "We tried her combination quite a few times, and the Vault kept opening."
Stevens drove back to his office and contacted SCA for assistance on how to proceed. "I thought I'd have to send the Vault to SCA and wait a few weeks for the check," he recounts. So he was pleasantly surprised when he reached SCA contact Norman Beck, who was on a car phone in Alabama. Beck flew from there to Dallas, and from Dallas to Calgary. By September 28th he had met with Stevens and confirmed Brent's win. "SCA was amazing," says Stevens.
The million dollar prize was a milestone for Canada, according to Stevens, who says it was the first time a radio station has awarded that amount. The win provided plenty of exposure for CFCW, and was covered by all three major television stations and two major newspapers. But even without a payout, the promotion would have been a success, says Stevens.
Local businesses participated in the promotion by serving as sponsors for the Vault, which was moved to a different remote location every weekday. At almost every spot, participants stood in line to try their luck. At one business, 293 people took turns punching in their lucky numbers in just under three hours. But the station's greatest success may have been at a rural fair, where 211 contestants tried the Vault in an hour and a half.
The Vault generated so much attention for CFCW that the radio station extended the contest after Brent's win, adding on another week to their original agreement with SCA. Although there were no additional winners, Stevens recently received the station's ratings for that time period and says he's 'very, very pleased' with the numbers. He's also pleased with SCA's service and commitment. ""SCA gave us million dollar exposure without our having to pay a million dollars."
