Fishing Derby Hooks Community Attention

Syracuse, NY - Anglers and environmentalists alike teamed up this past August to land the big one - a fish worth $5 million dollars in a newly restored natural resource. And SCA was there to help contestants reel in the prizes.

"Once known as one of the nation's most polluted bodies of water, Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, NY was the scene for television station WTVH's 5 Million Dollar Ultimate Fishing Challenge. WTVH, a Granite-owned station, planned the event to call regional attention to the lake's improved condition, and to highlight ongoing clean-up efforts.

The contest was one of the largest tagged fishing challenges in the country. Rules were simple: Ten days before the contest, SCA tagged and released 50 fish. One was marked with the $5 million dollar number. "To collect the grand prize, the fish had to be the first tagged catch of the day." After that, the tagged fish was worth $1 million. Both amounts were covered by SCA.

An estimated 7,000 to 10,000 anglers turned out, catching everything from bass to catfish to crappie. And while the million dollar fish is still out there, plenty of other prizes were awarded. Participants hooked 18 tagged fish worth everything from jewelry to a grand piano to cash prizes - over $250,000 in winnings.

But anglers weren't the only winners. WTVH reaped plenty of positive publicity by highlighting its involvement in an issue important to the community. And a number of additional sponsors were able to garner press and maximize their advertising dollars by offering smaller prizes.

Like WTVH, many of those sponsors relied on SCA to make their participation possible. "SCA's coverage is very affordable," says Don Cornwall, Granite Broadcasting CEO. "The fishing Challenge was a huge success for our television station," adds Gary Wordlaw, President and General Manager of WTVH. And that's no fish tale.
