Contest Just the Right Size


Evansville,IN - Now in its second year, Shoe Carnival’s holiday promotion with SCA was a huge success, pulling shoppers into its stores during a tough retail market. Not only did the company decide to run the promotion again, it doubled the prize package — and added even more store locations to the contest.

“We had two winners during the contest last year, and it was a really good promotion,” says Shoe Carnival Promotions Supervisor Mike Sizemore. “By spending just a few more dollars on prize coverage this year, we made it great.”


The day after Thanksgiving, each of Shoe Carnival’s 208 stores — an increase of 28 locations — gave customers a ticket stub as they entered the store. At 7, 8, and 9 a.m., one ticket number was announced. The chosen contestant then pulled a card out of a box that was decorated to look like a present. Each card

revealed a gift, ranging from a DVD player, to a dome tent, to a grand prize of $10,000.

“We had three grand prize winners in the first hour, way above the odds,” recalls Sizemore. “At first I was really scared that we were doing something wrong. But when I called SCA, they said it just happens sometimes.”

Reassured, Sizemore was able to relax and enjoy the rest of the contest. “When you run a promotion to draw traffic into the store, you don’t always get a winning
customer,” he says. “By the time we had the sixth winner, it was just amazing.”

In addition to the advanced advertising Shoe Carnival did, early morning shoppers quickly spread the word about the contest, contacting friends and family to urge them to come to the stores. “If $5,000 is a good prize, $10,000 is a fabulous prize,” says Sizemore. “It definitely drew more traffic".

The company was also able to generate additional publicity from the six winners, creating press releases and ads that kept Shoe Carnival uppermost in shoppers’ minds for several weeks following.
