Radio Promotion Hits Home Run
With Listeners and Sponsors
New York, NY - A local radio station delivered a unique baseball promotion to its
advertiser, providing them increased exposure and additional store traffic.
In the "Home Depot Hit for the Cycle" contest, a lucky listener was rewarded every time
a Mets or Yankees player hit a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game.
Throughout the season, participants registered at area Home Depot stores or at Lexus of
Englewood, which provided the prize - a Lexus IS 300.
Before each game, the station randomly selected and announced on-air an entrant's name.
If a player hit for the cycle, the selected contestant won the new Lexus, valued at
$30,000! "This promotion allowed us to reward our listeners with a chance to win a new
car while driving traffic at the retail level," says the station's director of sports. "It had a great response."
"We had thousands of entries," he continues. He attributes the contest's success in part to the power of radio, the excitement surrounding the chance to win a brand new luxury car, and the fact that fans are so passionate about the Mets and the Yankees.
On July 29th, at an away game in Montreal, Mets player Eric Valent singled in the second inning, doubled in the third, hammered a two-run homer in the fifth, and tripled in the seventh inning to complete his hit for the cycle.
This hit awarded Debbie Cenci the Lexus, and the radio station and Home Depot claimed
the promotion an out-of-the-park success.
"This was a creative way to give our clients something different, which translates into the ability to better sell the broadcast," says the director of sports. "The fact that we had a winning contest was just gravy, but the buzz around it helped us renew our relationship with our sponsors." The sponsor has renewed its contract for the remaining games this season and plans to run the contest again next year.
"The best part so far has been how quickly payment was received. Now that it's happened, I'm glad we worked with a reputable company."
Bottom Line
SCA's radio promotions are proven to generate more advertising dollars for your station. A creative baseball promotion drove retail traffic to advertiser's locations and created plenty of buzz around town.
