Watch to Win Contest Sweeps Competition

Albuquerque, NM - A local NBC affiliate swept up the competition with a million-dollar watch to win contest that resulted in a record 79% response rate and boosted ratings in key demographics during Spring Sweeps.

The television station sent uniquely-numbered "Million Dollar Giveaway" direct mail pieces to a targeted audience of 24-54 year-olds, inviting them to mail in the attached entry form. Two names were randomly drawn and read each day during the 6 and 10 p.m. broadcasts.

After hearing his or her name, the contestant had 10 minutes to call the station and read off the unique number on the mail piece. If the number matched the one the station had randomly selected, the contestant won $1 million!

To keep interest high, contestants received $1,000 just for being selected and calling in. The strategy paid off -- of the 48 entrants selected, 38 called in -- a record 79% response rate.

For the TV station, this promotion was a complete success. "This made for really good television," says the station's sales manager. The station won the ratings for the contest's time periods and also won the ratings for the key 24-54 year-old demographic during Spring Sweeps.

The promotion worked so well that the station plans to run a similar one in November for Fall Sweeps. And for the fifth year in a row, it will turn to SCA for coverage.

"We use SCA for watch to win contests because they're proven to boost ratings in key demographics," says the station sales manager.
