Doritos® Awards $1 Million in
Consumer-Generated Super Bowl Ad Contest
Plano, TX - Two unemployed brothers walked away with a $1 million prize for creating the best-liked commercial during the Big Game, thanks to a consumer-generated contest hosted by Doritos® maker Frito-Lay. The winning ad, called “Free Doritos,” featured a man shattering a vending machine with a crystal ball after predicting he would receive free Doritos.

SCA Promotions Secures Doritos’ Budget and Pays the $1 Million Prize

The “Crash the Super Bowl” promotion, launched by Doritos® in October, gave people nationwide the opportunity to shoot their own amateur Doritos® commercial and submit it to the contest site for a chance to see their ad aired live during the Pittsburgh vs. Arizona Big Game. Doritos® selected five commercials through a consumer vote in January. The top two winning commercials aired during the game.
To add to the excitement, Doritos® announced that it would award a $1 million prize if either of the consumer-generated ads ranked first in USA Today’s Ad Meter, a real-time testing of how much consumers like the ads aired during the Big Game. To offer the prize, Doritos® maker Frito-Lay turned to SCA Promotions for promotional risk coverage.
SCA Promotions fixed the promotion budget and paid the prize within two days.
