Sports Fever Heats Up

From football and hockey to golf and racing, sports fans nationwide were cheering SCA clients this year, with over $950,000 being paid out to lucky sports contest winners. Here are some of the highlights, on and off the field:

Football Fame
Pennsylvania teacher, Pat McKee booted a 36-yard field goal in the final stage of the Pass, Punt and Kick competition during WDAD-FM radio’s halftime show at an Indiana (Pa.) High School football game. The kick won McKee a $25,000 car of his choice.

Fort Wayne, Ind. football fan, William F. Simmons, Jr. would probably like to “kiss“ Hershey Food Corp. for giving him a free trip to Hawaii and a chance to become a millionaire during the annual “Million-Dollar Kick“ contest at the Pro Bowl.

Fans earned more than $18,850 when Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Tim Dwight returned a fourth quarter kickoff 94-yards for a Super Bowl touchdown. The same game also earned Western Tire and Appliance (Farmington, N.M.) customers more than $190,000 in rebates after the Denver Broncos drove their way to a second straight championship.

And all season-long, SCA’s “Pigskin Pick ’Em“ had Monday morning quarterbacks jamming the lines of their favorite radio stations trying to be the selected caller to predict the winners of 13 upcoming football games.

Nothin’ but Net
The Harlem Globetrotters’ “Million-Dollar Memory Shot“ promotion gave 10 lucky contestants the chance to shoot for $1 million — and the memory of a lifetime when they met the country’s most beloved basketball team.

Hockey Heists
New York Rangers fan Dave Wartman took home $77,777 for slapping a shot-in-the-slot from center ice during the “Super Sevens“ promotion by SCA and Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Other SCA hockey promotions heating up the ice this year, included: “Shoot the Puck,“ “Shuffle Hockey,™“ “Rapid Fire,™“ “Hit the Post,™“ and “Goalie Goal.™“

Hole-in-One Heroes
Flower Mound, Texas made the maps this fall as lucky golfers Greg Rake and David Carter were awarded prizes worth more than $50,000 when both made a hole-in-one at the Annual Dunham & Miller Open.

Another hole-in-one netted Larry Price the $20,000 grand prize at the U.S. Army Community & Family Support Center’s,”Shot of the Century“ contest.

Batting a Thousand
Arizona Diamondbacks fan, Gylene Hoyle beat the odds to win $1 million when she predicted what inning a grand slam would occur and who would hit it.

SCA’s “Strike Out/Walk the Batter™“ contest was a hit with fans who tried their luck at throwing three strikes before throwing four balls at a home-plate target. Also batting in big bucks for lucky contestants was the “Per Inning Promo™“ when specific events and plays are predicted during certain innings.

Driving for Dollars
Dirt racing champ Dale McDowell of Rossville, Ga., drove home with $20,000 in bonus money from Dixie Speedway owner, Mickey Swim, (courtesy of SCA) after driving to victory in the annual “Hav-a-Tampa Shootout“ Series Championship.

Discount Auto Parts shoppers raced into stores in 1999 trying to predict the top five finishers of the “Pepsi 400“ for a chance to win $1 million. Nanticoke Homes also generated a lot of attention as fans placed their bets on Jeff Burton, who will win them a new Nanticoke Home if he finishes first in two of three races at the New Hampshire, Martinsville, and Atlanta speedways.

Horsin’ Around
At Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas this past Memorial Day, horse race fans were pitching their luck during the “Million-Dollar Horseshoe Toss.” This exciting promotion gave selected contestants the chance to win a mega-million by hooking a regulation horseshoe from 47 feet on the main track.
